Initial Consultation

Patient will be evaluated by board certified anesthesiologist for medical history and physical examination to make sure there is no contraindication to ketamine treatment.

Patient will also have initial mental health screening using various screening tools such as Hamilton Scale for Depression,Screening Scale for PTSD,Beck Anxiety Inventory and Brief pain Inventory.
The first treatment will be initiated and further treatment plan will be established.

Patient is recommended to have no solid food including milk for 8 hrs and clear liquids such as water,juice without pulp,soda,clear tea and black coffee can be taken 4 hours prior to infusion.

Exclusion for patient selection is as follows:
  • Patient with psychosis such as schizophrenia
  • Patient in manic state
  • Seizure disorder
  • Active use of cocaine
  • Pregnancy
  • Recent Heart attack within 6 month
  • Recent stroke within 6 month
  • Sever hypertension
  • Unstable angina
  • Arrhythmia such as rate uncontrolled atrial fibrillation
  • Prolonged QT interval from EKG

The Infusion Process

You will have an IV line placed and set of vital signs are checked.
Ketamine infusion will be administered and monitored care will be provided by board certified anesthesiologist in a private setting.

You will be laying comfortably in a recliner lounge chair for 45 minutes. Set of vital signs,respiration and your response will be checked periodically by anesthesiologist. We are prepared and trained for monitored anesthetic care such as airway management,treatment of hypertension and nausea.

Additional Magnesium may be added to enhance the NMDA receptor blockage by decreasing the influx of calcium. Zofran will be given in case of nausea.

For pain treatment, patient may need 2 hours of ketamine infusion depend on the conditions. Ketamine dosage may be escalated and patient will be closely monitored. Magnesium and lidocaine will be often added.

Supplemental IV vitamin B complex ,high dose vitamin C and antioxidants such as alpha lipoic acid and glutathione are optional to promote vitality and cellular healing process.

You must prove to have a ride after the procedure before starting the infusion. You are not allowed to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machine 24 hrs.

Since benzodiazepines may decrease the ketamine effect, we recommend not to take benzodiazepines such as valium,librium,clonazepam and xanax. You may bring those medications.

During the procedure,you can listen to your soothing music and can bring own pillow or blanket.

Your Experience

During ketamine infusion,you may feel light,bubbly and disconnected. You may experience body floating and traveling.

You will maintain awareness with dream like state with dissociative experience. When you close eyes, you may see lights,colors and shapes.

With subanesthetic dose,patients rarely experience side effect. Some people can experience nausea,increased blood pressure and agitation. Most people have very pleasant experience.

The effect of single infusion may last several days to a week. Series of six infusions can make symptom free up to several weeks to months. Booster infusion will be given every month to few times a year. You are strongly recommended to follow with psychiatrist for medication management and psychotherapy.

Ketamine is not known to cause physical dependency and addiction.
